The <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">brief looked for innovative ideas and proposals that took advantage of the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">unique constraints and opportunities of the site, creating a <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">transformational green space for the local community. They were seeking <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">innovative ideas and proposals that made the best use of the unique <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">constraints and opportunities of the site. A locally distinctive design <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">promoting Garden City principles, that responded sensitively and <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">creatively to the site, and reflected the character of the area, showcasing, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">how green infrastructure and public space deliver and support the other <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">principles.<\/span><\/div><div class=\"textLayer\"><br role=\"presentation\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">West Hendon Playing Fields is a large public open space located in the London borough <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">of Barnet. It is a well-used community and sporting resource, offering a range of outdoor <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">leisure facilities, including football pitches, tennis courts and a cricket square. It is home <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">to a nursery, martial arts club, and lawn bowls club, situated within a building (The <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Pavilion) in the north-east section of the site. The site has been identified for investment <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">in facilities, access, and its identity and relationship to the community. West Hendon <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Playing Fields is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest, so the development will protect <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and enhance the area\u2019s ecology and biodiversity.<\/span><\/div><div class=\"textLayer\"><br role=\"presentation\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">The judges evaluated each entry individually and the scores were then moderated. This <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">process identified the three highest-scoring entries that have been put forward to Stage <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">2 of the contest. The three finalists are: <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">LDA Design, Ove Arup &amp; Partners International <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Ltd and Southern Green Ltd. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">At the second stage, the design is developed further and details of the design team, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">project process, and proposed costs are submitted.<\/span><\/div><div class=\"textLayer\"><br role=\"presentation\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">The LBB intends to award a contract to the winning entrant for the development of the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">winning scheme, which has a<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">&nbsp;<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">total estimated project budget of \u00a318.3m.<\/span><\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><\/div><div class=\"p-pdf_iframe__page\" aria-label=\"Page 2\" data-page-number=\"2\"><div class=\"textLayer\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><strong>Stage 2 timeline<\/strong> <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">(<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">*subject to unavoidable change)<\/span><\/div><ul><li class=\"textLayer\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Stage 2 Contest Documentation Published \u2013 Tuesday, 15 November 2022<\/span><\/li><li class=\"textLayer\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Deadline for Stage 2 Contest Entries \u2013 12 noon, 4 January 2023<\/span><\/li><li><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Official notification of contract award to successful and unsuccessful entrants <\/span><br role=\"presentation\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">(envisaged) \u2013 w\/c 27 February 2023<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">A Barnet Council spokesperson said:<\/span><\/p><p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u201c<em>The design submissions we have received have been outstanding, each displaying <\/em><\/span><em><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">innovative and creative ways that we can transform West Hendon Playing Fields. These include a Playing Pitch Strategy (2017), a Parks and <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Open <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Spaces Strategy (2016-2026) and the Fit and Active Barnet Framework (2016-2021). The <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">documents are underpinned by a commitment within the Council\u2019s Corporate Plan that <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u2018Barnet\u2019s parks and open spaces will be amongst the best in London.\u2019<\/span><\/li><li class=\"textLayer\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">The Council is seeking to implement some of the recommendations made by these <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">strategies <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">by exploring the development of new sports hubs at three identified strategic sites \u2013<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Barnet <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Copthall, West Hendon Playing Fields and Barnet\/King George V Playing Fields.<\/span><\/li><li class=\"textLayer\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Section 106 contributions arising from the regeneration of the West Hendon estate have <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">presented an opportunity to improve the facilities on the playing fields and surrounding <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">areas with the aim of promoting and increasing participation in sport and physical <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">activity in the locality and raising the profile of the SSSI.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><div class=\"textLayer\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><strong>The West Hendon Playing Fields (WHPF)<\/strong> Project aims to deliver significant improvements <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">to a flagship greenspace within the London Borough of Barnet. Through improvements to <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the quality of the park; the introduction of a community sports hub; assorted indoor and <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">outdoor recreational facilities and improvements to connectivity within and around the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">site, the Council is aiming to create a premier open space within North-West London for <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">both residents and visitors alike.<\/span><\/div><div>&nbsp;<\/div><div class=\"annotationLayer\"><strong>Landscape Institute<\/strong><\/div><\/div><div class=\"p-pdf_iframe__page\" aria-label=\"Page 3\" data-page-number=\"3\"><div class=\"textLayer\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">The Landscape Institute (LI) is the chartered body for the landscape profession. It is an <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">educational charity that promotes the art and science of landscape practice.
